The Origins of G-Plan

G-Plan was introduced in the 1950s by E. Gomme Ltd., a well-established furniture company based in High Wycombe. It became one of the most successful examples of mass-produced furniture in post-war Britain.

The roots of E. Gomme Ltd. trace back to 1898 when Ebenezer Gomme and his brother-in-law, Jim Pierce, founded the business. Initially focused on crafting hand-made chairs, the company embraced machine tools as early as 1903. By 1909, with the completion of the Leigh Street factory, E. Gomme had established itself at the forefront of High Wycombe’s furniture industry.

In 1911, Ebenezer’s two sons joined the partnership, driving the company’s expansion beyond chairs to include sideboards, cabinets, and other furniture. By 1922, E. Gomme had opened a second factory at Spring Gardens, employing 300 workers. The firm became an innovator in the industry, adopting advanced machinery and leading the shift away from outdated practices like part-time working.

About the Designer - Ib Kofod Larsen

Architect Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921–2003) enjoyed a thriving career during the 1950s and 1960s, a golden era for Danish design. Much of his extensive furniture portfolio was created for international markets and manufactured outside Denmark. He collaborated with American, Swedish, British, and German furniture companies, which may explain why his work is better recognized abroad than in his native country.

Kofod-Larsen was part of the Danish Modern movement, though his career often operated under the radar compared to luminaries like Kaare Klint, Hans J. Wegner, Børge Mogensen, Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl, and Nanna Ditzel. Today, he is celebrated as one of the most underrated yet most exciting figures in Danish design—a visionary and one of Denmark's finest creative minds.

Although he considered himself more of an artisan than an academic, Kofod-Larsen’s work carries an artistic and poetic quality. His designs are characterized by soft curves, visual lightness, and a pure, graphic elegance. A purist with an eye for detail, he created furniture that appears deceptively simple at first glance but reveals intricate craftsmanship and inventive elements upon closer inspection. His work often bordered on engineering precision, and he was deeply involved in every aspect of production—from sketching and prototyping to testing and launching.

Kofod-Larsen's innovative approach extended beyond furniture design to rethinking how furniture is experienced. He had a remarkable understanding of materials, particularly wood, and often combined teak or rosewood with natural leather to create pieces that not only looked beautiful but also felt good to the touch and in use. For Kofod-Larsen, comfort was paramount.
